In 1998, the Shanghai Children's Medical Center was established through a collaboration between the Shanghai Municipal Government and the World Health Organization. In 2017, with the approval of the State Council, it was officially designated as the "National Children's Medical Center."

In April 2020, the construction project for the Zhangjiang Campus of the National Children's Medical Center was approved by the Shanghai Municipal Government.

According to Jiang Zhongyi, the Director of the Shanghai Children's Medical Center, the National Children's Medical Center Zhangjiang Campus will cover an area of 60 acres with a total construction area of 100,000 square meters.

This major construction project will provide the highest quality pediatric healthcare services for the Zhangjiang National Science Center and aims to align with international advancements.

Together with neighboring high-level hospitals such as Fudan University Affiliated Cancer Hospital and Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Hospital, it will establish a world-class cancer treatment hub with a full life cycle, modern medical technologies, and a focus on both domestic and international patients.

Efforts will be made to develop it into the "Shanghai version of MD Anderson" (note: MD Anderson is a renowned cancer treatment center in the United States).
